Lapp Valley Farm, Best Ice Cream Ever!
Just 3 miles south of New Holland is Lapp Valley Farm. This Mennonite dairy farm has a herd of Jersey cows....those lovely brown cows with the big brown soulful eyes. The milk from this herd is processed, bottled and sold only at the farm. They even have a drive-up window. They also make the best ice cream around. Year ‘round, but especially in the summer, you are sure to find many folks enjoying their favorite flavor, maybe vanilla, strawberry, maple walnut, coconut, mint chocolate chip, peanut butter twirl, black cherry, chocolate or one of several other flavors, in a dish, cone or their own-made waffle cones. As you wander around the farm you will usually find Samantha, a bull dog, sleeping on the porch. The peacock will be roaming about or you may spot him perched on the roof of the barn. There are always kittens about. The calf pens house the newborn calves and those up to 3 months old. Then they are sent out to the pasture. At 6 months old they go to the heifer barn until they are bred and then on to the milking line. Should you find yourself at the farm around 4:30 be sure to go into the milking parlor where you can observe the cows being milked and can ask questions. Did you know the milk is measured in pounds, not ounces or gallons at this point? I think Lapp Valley Farm is a Lancaster County treasure, picture-postcard perfect!
And be sure to bring your cooler and lots of ice to take home that farm fresh milk and your favorite flavor, or two, of ice cream!
